Where: East Africa

One Acre Fund is looking to find highly driven, talented, passionate individuals who would like to develop a career abroad. One Acre Fund operates with the goal of serving small farmers. They currently have running programs in Kenya, Rwanda, and Burundi, as well as pilot programs in Ghana, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. They are a young organization (about 6 years old), and they serve farmers by providing a complete bundle of support. They also operate with a social entrepreneurship mentality, the farmers pay for their service. Currently 80% of their field costs are covered by program revenue.

Details:

(1) Terra Bean Coffee
New company that aims to make direct trade between coffee farmers and roasters easy and accessible. The service will help coffee roasters and coffee farmers overcome the information, communication, shipping and marketing barriers that currently inhibit them from establishing direct relationships and trading directly. The goal is to create sustainable business relationships that enable both the farmers and the roasters to take more ownership of their businesses by controlling more of the supply chain.

Looking for positions in:

Logistics — Figuring out the most cost efficient and lowest risk way to get coffee from the origin country to the US. This means understanding how exporting works, importing, domestic shipping and warehousing. I have started conversations with logistics and importing companies.
Legal — Figuring out what contracts need to be in place (This includes contracts between Terra Bean Coffee and roasters, Terra Bean Coffee and importers, Terra Bean Coffee and exporters, coffee roasters and coffee farmers, coffee farmers and exports, roasters or Terra Bean Coffee and warehouses). Understanding exporting laws and container sharing laws of Costa Rica and Nicaragua and other prospective countries.
Creating example farm profiles (this may require skyping coffee farmers and speaking Spanish)
Interviewing coffee roasters to gain a better understanding of if/why they value direct trade, how they currently source their coffee, what would they like out of interactions with farmers?
Researching current direct trade projects both in the coffee industry and other industries.
Writing a business plan

(2) Somalian Refugee Sewing/English Classes

Part of Southwest Youth and Family Services. Somalian refugees are given sewing and English classes, this program allows women to acquire language skills while creating much needed clothing and other times for themselves and their families. Want to develop a fair trade brand.

You have an interest in sewing, DIY, immigrant communities (especially the Somali community), women’s empowerment, non-profit organizations and/or English as a Second Language would be a great fit.

(3) Hydroforma

Creates high-impact solutions to our global crises. Water is a looming global issue that can get anyone’s attention once it hits close enough to home. Doom and gloom doesn’t always sell, so their goal is to help people be more “water smart” by making the process fun.

You are a good fit if…

You have an interest in environmental impact, marketing, brand development, business development.

(4) Bangs Shoes
Bangs is a for-profit humanitarian brand that supports 4 partner non-profits in 4 different causes (Hunger, Development, Disaster Relief, and Water). They do so through the sale of 4 colorful and stylish shoes!

Looking for positions in:

Marketing — the internship is largely focused on brand building and the intern’s goal will be to establish a team on campus and spread the word about Bangs and their partner non-profits. Bangs wants to make REAL and sustainable change.

Join our 90 minutes brainstorming session to help Microryza, a startup founded by UW students! Microryza is a social crowdfunding platform for research projects.

This is another Startup from Startup Weekend Edu in Seattle. Here is their pitch:

I bet you all wonder where the name comes from, right? It comes from Mycorrhiza. But what the heck are Mycorrhizae? Mycorrhizae are symbiotic, microscopic fungi that live in the roots of plants, and they are found everywhere that plants grow. They break down nutrients, fight off pathogens, and stabilize the soil. Although they’re small and unnoticeable, when you have lots of them they can support an entire ecosystem of roots, shrubs, and trees. Without mychorizzae many of the plants on our planet would not survive.

Here’s the Challenge: Microryza is launching this Thursday, how would you make it known to the largest number of people?

Goals:

- 100 000 users in 6 months (Seattle)

- 50 projects

- Same spirit as the website

Constraints:

- Target donors (not researchers)

- 7 people in the Microryza team (5 full time)

- Creativity > Money

We will be solving the challenge of Street Code, a Startup that makes donations to homeless people more easy and humane through QR codes: http://swsea.posterous.com/street-code.

Street Code won 2nd place at last Startup Weekend at the Hub.

The challenge: How can we test if people would scan the qr code?

Goals:

test with 10 homeless people
for a week
make sure the process is hassleless/enjoyable for both te homeless person and the passerby

Constraints:

Affordable
Brief
Distribution by the organizations that help homeless people

Instead, we teach disadvantaged communities how to use the free market to their advantage.

HOW CAN YOU HELP THE CAUSE?

Buy fair trade products! You can start by purchasing the products here, at SEC 3rd Annual Fair Trade Markeplace. Ask the vendors what impacts are you creating by purchasing their products. They’d be glad to explain.
